4 Tips to “Go Green” on Mobile for Earth Day and Beyond

Meg Rahner April 22, 2015

Happy Earth Day! Today is the perfect day to plant a tree, start composting, give back to the environment, hug a tree, or learn tips on how to save energy on your mobile phone. That’s where we come in. The team at MobileFOMO has gathered some top tips on saving energy on your mobile device. Here’s to a greener planet!

1. Unplug your charger when you’re not charging your phone

This one is simple but easy to forget. Your phone charger is still using energy when it’s plugged in, so do the earth a favor and unplug it when you’re not charging your devices. While it’s not a significant amount of energy, it adds up over time. Calculate out how much energy your charger is using when it’s plugged in here.

2. Minimize your phone’s backlight

A brightly backlit phone = quicker to lose battery = energy wasting. Reduce it so you’re not using as much energy. To do this on an Android device, go to Settings – Display – Brightness. In the Display mode, you can also adjust your Sleep settings i.e. whether you want your phone to sleep after 15 seconds of inactivity vs. 15 minutes. To minimize your phone’s backlight on an iPhone, choose Settings then Display & Brightness.

3. Turn off your phone

As much as the thought of turning off your phone may scare you (read: nomophobia), sometimes it’s refreshing to be disconnected from your phone and it saves energy. And most importantly, it’s Earth Day! No better day to turn your head away from your screen and toward nature.

4. Save paper with your phone

Use your phone’s digital notepad instead of jotting notes down on paper. Save paper, save trees, save the earth.
