How Home Buying is Going Mobile with Zillow

Meg Rahner February 17, 2015

No longer is it imperative to find a reliable real estate agent when seeking to buy a house; all you need is a smartphone. The role of mobile in home buying has increased dramatically. Zillow is a home and real estate marketplace dedicated to helping homeowners, home buyers, sellers, renters, real estate agents, mortgage professionals, landlords and property managers find and share vital information about homes, real estate, mortgages and home improvement. During the fourth quarter of 2014, visits to Zillow via a mobile device increased 57% year-over-year.

In December 2014, 420 million homes — or 157 homes per second — were viewed on Zillow via a mobile device. Nearly two-thirds of Zillow’s visits come from a mobile device, and on weekends the percentage rises to more than 70%.

Zillow is expected to close a merger with real estate search engine company Trulia as early as today, as announced in its Q4 earnings report. According to Bloomberg, based on Zillow’s offer to buy each Trulia share for 0.444 of each Zillow share, the deal is now worth about $1.78 billion.

Simply stated, 2014 was a remarkable year for Zillow with record revenue, record mobile usage and record Premier Agent advertiser revenue,” said Spencer Rascoff, Zillow CEO, in a prepared statement.

Zillow’s New York City marketplace, StreetEasy, also gained record annual revenue in 2014, from significant annual growth in mobile and Web traffic, listings page views and contacts delivered to brokers.

According to research from from WebsiteBox, about 89% of new home shoppers use a mobile search engine to research information. The company’s research found one in four users visit Web sites with mobile devices. Of those users, about 75% use smartphones and 25% use tablets.

Zillow currently has four sleek and easy to use mobile apps. Zillow Real Estate lets you find everything you need to buy and sell a home, allows you to search for sale, pre-market properties and recently sold homes, and lets you see the Zestimate® home values of 110+ million homes. Zillow Rentals notifies you when a new rental hits the market and allows you to search for apartments, condos, homes and townhouses for rent. Zillow Mortgages gives you the ability to calculate affordability, estimate mortgage payments and compare refinancing costs. Zillow Digs allows you to browse images by space, style, project cost and keyword as well as see project estimates for kitchens and bathrooms, based on your location.
