FOMO weekend edition: Use your mobile phone to watch tv almost anywhere…

Did you know how to watch TV on a mobile phone?  You’ll be glad to know that whether you have an iPhone or an Android, you can easily watch most TV stations from your phone, wherever you are. Watching tv on the phone can be fun, but it can also marketers to understand the different ways that ads will appear.  The idea that we are dealing with one big screen and one little one is outdated, we’re dealing with a whole experience that needs to be seamless. The game is only going to keep changing!

It’s no surprise that TV has come to smartphones – today, 87% of adults in the US own a cell phone, and 84% say that they can’t go a day without it.  Smartphone use grew 81% in 2012, and users expect to be able to do anything they can imagine with them.  For many, this means watching TV.

Now, let’s find out how to watch TV on a mobile phone in a few different ways.

Watching TV on the phone via the web

If you can access websites with your phone, you can find a few where you can watch TV. There are some free and some paid sites you can use:

Mobiletv.net is a great site with fast load times.  It features 60 popular network channels (mostly US but some international) like ABC, BBC, Cinemax, and Al Jazeera.  You can stream live TV on this site for free with occasional ads.

Yamgo.com also lets you stream live TV but has more diverse channels from around the world, like a Greenpeace channel, Venus TV (premier Asian entertainment), and news from France, India, and Russia.  The site breaks its channels down into categories, including Fashion, Music, Entertainment, Sports, and Bikini.  Yes, Bikini is a real category… This site is also free, but some channels are only available through the Yamgo Facebook app, which brings us to our next section…

Watching TV with Mobile Apps

There is no shortage of apps for watching TV on your mobile phone.  Some let you watch several different channels or shows, and some are for a single channel only.  We”ve noticed a distinct increase in the smaller companies who are now advertising via tv mobile apps.

Hulu Plus is one of the most popular TV apps, available for both Mac and Android phones.  It features a number of hit shows both current and past, and syncs up with your TV and other devices so you can pick up where you leave off.  A subscription costs $7.99 per month.

HBO Go lets you watch your favorite HBO shows wherever you are, as well as a huge variety of sports, movies, and documentaries.  Available for both Mac and Android phones as well as a number of other devices like tablets and XBOX360, this app has convenient categories and easy-to-navigate menus.  This service is free for HBO subscribers.

So, these are ways to watch TV on a mobile phone.  Generally, it’s more difficult to find a good free app for watching TV than a website, and you will most likely have to pay if you want to go that route.  The examples here represent the basic types of services you’ll find, some free and some paid – did you think Netflix was the only thing out there?
