“Want, Need, Love” – That’s what Wanelo (pronounced “wah-nee-lo”) stands for. Wanelo is the brainchild of Deena Varshavskaya, an excitable and clever entrepreneur originally from Siberia. Frustrated with the shopping experience several years ago, Varshavskaya was determined to build something to fix and optimize it. She wanted to build a platform for a social-shopping experience centered around empowering the individual and then seized an opportunity in the market to create a better shopping experience. In 2010, Wanelo was born.
At the Startup Grind conference in Mountain View on February 4, 2014, Varshavskaya spoke to a crowd of hundreds about the process and challenges of creating Wanelo.

Her three lessons learned from creating a start-up with a non-technical background are:

Wanelo is specifically built with shopping in mind. Unlike Pinterest, where users often use it for other purposes such as collecting or like a web scrapbook, Wanelo is used for browsing and shopping. Images pinned on Pinterest can often include beautiful products that are unavailable and prices unlisted, but almost all the items on Wanelo are available for purchase. The buy button is loud and prominently displayed on the product page. Any items that are out of stock, have a poor image, or are mispriced can be easily reported for review.
TechCrunch reported Wanelo reached its 10 million mark. This reflects nearly 70 percent growth in the past five months alone with more than 200,000 stores adding their products to the Wanelo’s platform.
Aware of how the shopping experience is often cross-platforms, Wanelo is available both for mobile phones, tablets, and web (Android, iPad, and iPhone included), and the apps are fantastically designed to optimize shopping. Wanelo’s most highly-used demographic is young fashion-savvy females and a large part of its virality is through word-of-mouth. You heard it here – Wanelo is simply a great product.
