The world is a big ol’ place! It’s hard to say any one company is the mobile marketing leader. For the past few years, SXSW (South by Southwest) has been one of the world’s largest showcases for the latest in mobile technology. Thousands of tech-savvy music lovers flock to the annual SXSW festival where the latest in mobile technology and apps are unveiled. From robot barristas to talking shoes, we’ve seen it all!
Some of the world’s leading mobile marketing gurus are big honchos Walmart and Starbucks. The success of the Starbucks’ mobile marketing strategy has reached epic proportions. In 2012, Starbucks was awarded the prestigious Mobile Marketer of the Year Award. The company’s winning marketing strategy is a combination of mobile apps, SMS messages and QR codes. Starbucks also focuses on a multi-channel approach and this is what has given them the edge in the highly competitive mobile technology industry. Towards the end of 2012, Starbuck’s mobile payment app had exceeded 70 million processed payments. The payment app was introduced in 2011 and is the epitome of simplicity. It can be used with smart phones such as the iPhone and Android. Customers are conveniently able to view transactions, check their account balances and reload their card with any credit card via the app. The CEO of Starbucks, Mr. Howard Schultz, in a recent report, stated that there were currently over seven million people using the Starbuck’s mobile payment app.
Walmart, the other SXSW mobile marketing expert, was conferred one of the highest accolades in mobile retail and commerce in 2012 when they received the Mobile Retailer of the Year Award. According to Mobile Commerce Daily, the award is the highest honor for strategic, smart and creative use of mobile technology. In 2012, Walmart launched its prolific Store Mode mobile app. The app utilizes geo-fencing and geo-location technology to discover when a consumer enters a Walmart retail outlet.
Customers are also able to scan bar and QR codes, arrange shopping lists and acquire coupons digitally with the Store Mode mobile app. Walmart launched the time saving Scan & Go service that makes it possible for consumers to scan their own items with their iPhone while shopping before packing their purchases in bags. Consumers would then proceed to the checkout to finalize their payment. Walmart mobile apps can be used with iPads, iPhones and Android.
SXSW mobile marketers have reached unparalleled success and the tech-savvy would do well to keep an eye on them to discover the next mobile marketing marvel.
